Spring Carnival - Bargara Day 3
The final SC day at Bargara with the same unusual winds from the north, saw our visitors adapting a little better than the locals. 67 Ladies and 104 Men took on our short but testing course. Bargara producing only 3 winners out of the 12. Chris Wake(38) stuttered home in A grade after 23 pts on the front 9, beating JB Bell(36) by 2. Other winners in the Men were all visitors, B Grade going to Greg Voss(35)(Gainsborough) pipping Robert Heaney(34)(HB) by 1, thanks to a 3 pointer on the 18th. Theo Poelstra(40) posted the best score of the day, winning C grade, with Alan Dwyer(36) from Tallebudgera on the Gold Coast, (sorry Alan, I'm a POM and had to look that up), as runner up. For the girls, Bargara lady Christine Parkinson(39) continued her good form producing the girl's best score of the day beating Shirley Lathouras(38)(Meadowbrook) by 1 - runner up 2 days in a row Shirley! Teena Poelstra(34c/b)(Bundy) made it a family affair by winning a tight B Grade - nice birdie on 13 Teena, Sandy Lockhard - yesterday's B Grade winner, also scoring 34c/b for 2nd place. In C Grade Susan LeMarrec(38)(Caloundra) took the honours beating our President Shirley Leacy(35) by 3. Day 3's photo of the day is of the 2 girls who made the Carnival at Bargara happen. Wendy, from the Wide Bay, and Sue our own Vets Golf Admin have worked their tails off putting this event together against the odds. So, next time you see either of them a word of appreciation for all their hard work would not go amiss. Our Vice Captain Dennis Gaylard had a word in my ear about not getting a mention for his 35 points on Day 2. Sorry Dennis, I'll give you a mention now for your well-deserved 28 points today. Good luck to those travelling on to Bundy, Hervey Bay and Maryborough - it's been great having you.

From Your Committee
The Committee has decided our 4BBB non-Championship Events will remain as single team-card Comps with no handicapping. There are around 5 of these "novelty" events in our Golf calendar. WThis decision is to support teamwork and friendship and allow players to enjoy playing as a pair rather than 2 individuals also playing a pairs game. It allows couples to help in reading putts, play tactical shots and make decisions that encourage fun and thought in these Competitions. Players can enjoy themselves without the worry of handicapping. The option to pick up without being punished also speeds up play.
Some Vets are playing in carts or bikes without their membership numbers, this is against Club policy. Please contact Sue to sort this for your golf vehicle. Bunkers, bunkers, bunkers. Without sounding like a broken record please ensure you rake bunkers after using them and place the rake in the correct position. There is nothing worse than landing in someone's footprint or bunker "divot" that hasn't been raked. If you struggle raking bunkers please ask one of your playing partners to help. The rake should be left in a flat part of the bunker, with no part outside the bunker, facing the playing line of the hole you are playing.
Our most recent Committee meeting was held on the 11th of August. With the end of the Vets golfing year approaching the following 3 Committee members informed us they will not be standing for re-election - Don, Pat and Brian. Over the past few years, they have been the backbone of the Vets Committee, and we sincerely thank them for their invaluable service. Recruitment to replace the irreplaceable is underway. Entries for the Spring Carnival will close on August the 14th. Shortly after Bargara Vets members will be able to enter the 3 days of the carnival in Bargara - 2nd, 3rd and 4th September. Entries forms and details will be published shortly.
Shaun's August Golf Tip
Shaun’s August golf tip will be useful to all of us, unless you are Ross McNeilly or Barb Charters who, rumour has it, never miss a fairway! Getting out of the rough is a frustrating and challenging part of playing golf. Shaun says…Use a lofted club like a 6 or 7 iron to lift the ball, rather than trying to fight against long grass. This helps you avoid getting stuck in the rough. Before you play your shot, check what’s in front of you so you can plan your next move. If you have low branches in front you may have to go sideways. Grip down on the club slightly and position the ball slightly back in your stance. Play more of a punch shot, making sure you strike the ball first. This will help present the clubface squarer and advance the ball further. Avoid choosing a club with too little loft, as it often leaves the ball in the rough. Remember safer is smarter.
A Message From Our President
Welcome to the brand-new Bargara Vets website. The website has been created to improve communication with our members and visitors and to provide you with a portal to keep you up to date with news and information about anything regarding Bargara Vets golf. It will supersede the Voice of the Vets which will be discontinued. As the website evolves it will offer all you need to keep in touch with competitions, results, details of upcoming events, exclusive regular golf tips just for Vets from our Professional, Shaun, and much more. We hope you enjoy the new website and make an effort to visit it on a regular basis to find out what is going on. We will endeavour to keep the website in an easy to read, professional format and up-to-date with a little humour added in along the way. Updates from decisions made by your Committee will also appear here first. So please add our website to your list of favourites. Any constructive feedback you have along with photos or interesting articles please e-mail them to webadmin@bargaraveterangolfers.com.au
Vets On Tour
5 of our Vets, kitted out in their Bargara Vets shirts, recently embarked on the golfing trip of a lifetime to Thailand. Here they are preparing to play the Black Mountain golf course in Hua Hin in Thailand. Rated in the top 100 courses in the World and among the most scenic golf courses in Asia I'm sure our boys played some top-quality golf and enjoyed some great hospitality afterwards. Let's see your scorecards please boys!!
